2016 junior college offensive lineman signs with Sun Devils

Last weekend ASU hosted two prospects in Frank Darby and Alex Losoya and were ultimately rewarded for their recruiting efforts as Darby signed earlier this week with the team and Losoya followed suit today.

With no offers received coming out of Mater Dei (Calif.) High School, Losoya, an offensive guard, was forced to go the junior college route. After starting 11 games as a true freshman at nearby Orange Coast Community College, Losoya became a coveted 2016 prospect. His official visit to Tempe marked his last visit before arriving at a decision.

“I enjoyed it,” Losoya said of the Tempe visit in a previous interview. “I like meeting all the coaches and seeing the facilities. This visit was like the others I took but what stood out to me was that it would be good for me to come there because the depth (chart) is pretty good in terms of playing right away and that is what intrigued me the most. The visit did fulfill my expectations about the school.

“Coach Thomsen said I’m an athletic and nasty player, and I have played before in this scheme that they are running. They run the ball a lot, do a lot of screen (passes) and that’s what I like. I can run downfield and block and that is something they do a lot. He said that I will play inside at guard. Coach Graham talked to me about what their philosophy is all about, academics and where I would fit in.”

The 6-4 300-pound lineman visited Colorado State, Arkansas, and Auburn, and has had a few more offers from other Power 5 teams. For a prospect that virtually commanded no recruiting attention just two years ago, suffice to say that Losoya’s recruiting process in the last few months has been quite surprising.

“I was expecting to get recruiting attention,” Losoya commented, “but I wasn’t expecting to get so much attention in such a short time. I wish it would have happened back in December so it would give me more to me to figure it out. But I’m not complaining and I’m feeling good about it.

“Playing time is very important to me. I only have three years and a redshirt to play. So I want to go somewhere where I will be an immediate impact. Going to a place where you know you fit socially is part of it too, but playing time and academics are the biggest things for me.”

Ultimately that place for Losoya was Arizona State University.
